  • DNA Banking for Epidemiologic Studies: a Review of Current Practices (2002): “(Full article online)Factors to be considered in choosing the appropriate specimens for epidemiologic studies include quality and quantity of DNA, convenience of collection and storage, cost, and the ability to accommodate future needs for genotyping. We focus on four types of specimens that are stored in these banks: 1) whole blood preserved as dried blood spots, 2) whole blood from which genomic DNA is isolated, 3) immortalized lymphocytes from whole blood or separated lymphocytes, prepared immediately or subsequent to cryopreservation, and 4) buccal epithelial cells. Each of the specimens discussed is useful for epidemiologic studies according to specific needs which we enumerate in our conclusions.” - http://www.cdc.gov/genomics/population/publications/dnabnk.htm

Since then, the EGF and the ESGM have flourished, providing top-notch specialized education to hundreds of young researchers, coordinating international research projects, and establishing collaborations between research institutions, private companies, and the European Union." - http://www.eurogene.org/index.php
  • Gene Gateway (US Dept of Energy): “Gene Gateway, originally designed as a Web companion to the popular Human Genome Landmarks poster, is a collection of guides and tutorials designed to help students and other novice users get started with some of the resources that make these data available to the public. This Web site introduces various Internet tools that anyone can use to investigate genetic disorders, chromosomes, genome maps, genes, sequence data, genetic variants, and molecular structures.” - http://www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/posters/chromosome/index.shtml

  • Straw-based serum storage - biological banks of the prospective cohort PRIME Study: “The prospective, cohort PRIME Study has recruited 10,592 men, aged 50-59 years in France and Northern Ireland, to establish new risk markers for CHD. A plasma serum bank was established comprising 240,000 samples, either in straws or tubes, which have been stored in liquid nitrogen for over 5 years. The use of straws was required to store the largest number of aliquots in the smallest possible space. The validity of freezing of plasma in straws was established for a number of key measurements under investigation. In contrast to the DNA bank, which enables the performance of a very large number of analyses on a small amount of material, the plasma/serum bank has to be managed very frugally, requiring laboratories to use the smallest volume possible in each analysis. Problems and difficulties solved during building and use of biological banks are presented. The initial results obtained using this plasma bank have demonstrated its validity.” - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12684574&dopt=Abstract
